Animal News Tuesday

It’s Tuesday, and you know what that means! Today, I’ll be touching on some of the animals that have appeared in the headlines recently and linking you to the full stories.

First up, we have a bit of a sad one. It seems like I always have sad news, but I promise this isn’t the case! It’s just that those stories have been in the headlines the most…Anyways, our first story of the day involves Tom Hanks.

The star actor of “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” and countless other films has made his way into the headlines with a story not unlike many that have appeared recently. It is with a heavy heart that he announced that his dog, Monty, passed away last week.

Hanks shares a few memories of his dear friend, including the tale of when a skunk attacked Monty and his other dog. Hanks jokes about the stench that pervaded his house and that he thought that they would have to move because of the smell.

There has been a huge outpouring of support for Hanks during his time of loss, with people giving him advice and their own stories on the loss of a companion. Some have encouraged him to get a new dog as soon as possible to help speed the grieving process. What do you think about that? Personally, I think that that would be one of the worst things to do, replacing your dearly departed with another so soon after. It just seems like you would expect the same things out of the new pet or constantly be comparing the new one to the old, and that’s never fair. But, I want to know what your thoughts are- New dog right away being helpful, or no?

Full story here.

Next up is a bit of showdog news. The Westminister Kennel Club has announced that no less than six new dog breeds will be making an appearance at the upcoming show. This now means that over 185 breeds will be competing for bragging rights, compared to 1990’s 142 possible breeds. In the last 12 years, there has never been more than six new breeds admitted at one time to the records.

The new breeds are as follows; the American English Coonhound, the Cesky Terrier, the Entlebucer Mountain Dog, the Finnish Laphund, the Norwegian Lundehun (or Puffin Dog), and the Xoloitzcuintl.

Best of luck to these newcomers and we’ll see you strutting your stuff in the ring of Madison Square on February 13-14! For images of these new breeds, click here.

That’s all I’ve got for today! I’ll see you back here next Tuesday for more animals in the news, but in the meantime, keep an eye out for my other updates!

Also, I will be adding a new page shortly that will contain a variety of treat recipes and ideas for your furry companions, so keep an eye out for it! I’ll be including a variety for those with special needs and if you ever want to share a recipe or have me post ones for a specific need, drop me a line in the comments!
